There are two main types of pumps: the flow pump and the filter pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flow pump creates an even flow in the aquarium, avoiding dead corners and preventing sediment accumulation. A good current also promotes the growth of plants and prevents the growth of algae in certain places. Especially for reef aquariums, sufficient current is of great importance to supply the sessile corals with nutrients and to wash away pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The filter pump, on the other hand, is responsible for carrying out the biological and mechanical filtration system. The water is passed through the filter, which removes particles and pollutants while being colonised by beneficial bacteria. These bacteria break down organic waste such as fish faeces and excess food and turn them into less harmful substances such as nitrate. A well-functioning filter system is crucial for maintaining water quality and preventing toxic conditions in the aquarium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Uniform_temperature_distribution\"><\/span>Uniform temperature distribution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The placement of the pumps in the aquarium is also of great importance. Strategic positioning can minimise flow barriers and dead space. It is recommended to place the pumps so that the water circulates from top to bottom and from side to side to ensure even distribution of nutrients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water circulation can also help to evenly distribute the temperature in the aquarium. Especially in larger aquariums or those equipped with powerful lighting systems, the temperature can vary greatly at different points.
