Triops are omnivores and extremely adaptable when it comes to their diet. In their natural behaviour, they are constantly foraging for food: they burrow through the substrate, filter the finest particles from the water, nibble on plant debris and do not shy away from animal matter either. Even cannibalism is part of the natural behaviour of these prehistoric crustaceans, particularly when food is scarce or there are significant size differences within the population. This behaviour is not a sign of \u2018aggression\u2019, but an evolutionary survival mechanism.<\/p>\n
Due to their rapid growth, Triops have a very active metabolism. Although natural microorganisms, bacteria and suspended matter are already present in the aquarium, this food supply alone is not sufficient. Targeted and appropriate feeding by the keeper is therefore essential to ensure healthy growth and stable development.<\/p>\n
Particular care is required, especially in the first few days after hatching. Newly hatched nauplii do not yet have fully developed mouthparts and cannot consume solid food. Instead, they initially feed on their yolk sac and on the finest microorganisms in the water. For this reason, the water composition plays a crucial role: a mixture of approximately 70% distilled water and 30% still mineral water has proven effective, as it provides sufficient minerals and microorganisms without overloading the water.<\/p>\n
Active feeding begins around 48 hours after hatching. In this phase, less is more: even a minimal amount \u2013 for example, a pinch of spirulina powder \u2013 is entirely sufficient. Overfeeding can quickly disrupt the delicate balance in the water and lead to oxygen depletion or bacterial blooms, which is particularly dangerous for young animals.<\/p>\n
As they grow, the range of food options expands significantly. In addition to spirulina, fine powdered food, ground food sticks or special rearing food can also be used later on. Older triops will also accept coarser food such as food tablets, plant matter or even small animal proteins. It is always important to ensure a controlled dosage and to monitor feeding behaviour in order to safeguard water quality and animal health in the long term.<\/p>\n
Our juvenile food is excellent for optimally supplying the Triops with nutrients through the first days of life. The powder has a high proportion of proteins (approx. 60 percent) and carbohydrates with a fat content of about 10 percent.<\/p>\n
It is important that the Triops are not overfed, as firstly, they can quickly die from overfeeding and secondly, water turbidity can develop. If the food is not eaten, bacteria will develop after a short time due to decay and have a negative effect on the water quality. A toothpick tip of the food is perfectly sufficient. The food can either be placed directly on the water surface or mixed with water in a test tube, pulled out with a pipette and the mixture injected into the tank. The second option has the advantage that the food is distributed throughout the entire tank and is therefore easier for the Triops to find.<\/p>\n
As it is very fine, the spirulina algae powder is suitable for all types of primeval crabs as well as for brine shrimp, fairy shrimp and clam shells.<\/p>\n
