Successful breeding of Triops depends on many different factors. The right water, a high-quality breeding stock and lighting in the aquarium. Because without light there is no hatching. The water should be a mixture of about 70 per cent distilled water and about 30 per cent still mineral water. The breeding stock should of course be Triops Galaxy 😉 Breeding will only be successful if all factors are carefully considered. If you are enthusiastic about the fascinating world of Triops and want to breed them yourself, then one question is particularly important: How warm does it actually need to be for Triops eggs to hatch? The right temperature is crucial for successful breeding. In this blog article, I will show you how many degrees the Triops eggs need for nauplii to hatch and what the ideal temperature is for breeding Triops.

Why is temperature so important?
Triops eggs are in a so-called diapause state, i.e. a kind of resting mode. Only when the environmental conditions are right, including the right temperature, is development started in the egg. If the water is too cold, often nothing happens. Or development is so slow that the larvae hatch weakened and do not survive.
However, if the water is too warm, for example above 30 °C, this can also be problematic: Although the larvae then often hatch quickly, they are stressed, have an accelerated metabolism and can die earlier as a result.
The optimum temperature for Triops eggs
Triops eggs are survival artists. In the wild, they can survive extreme heat, drought and even frost. However, when it comes to hatching, they are quite demanding. For successful breeding, you should maintain a water temperature of between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. This temperature range corresponds to the conditions that prevail in temporary ponds, the natural habitat of many Triops species.
Breeding works best at around 26 to 27 °C, as the hatching rate is particularly high in this range. Some species, such as Triops longicaudatus, can also cope with slightly cooler water, but the general rule is: the closer you stay to 26 °C, the better.
How to keep the temperature constant
If you don’t have a particularly warm summer or if your propagator is in a cool room, you can hardly avoid using a heater. Here are two tried and tested options:
- Aquarium heating rod: Particularly ideal in larger tanks. Make sure that the heating rod is small enough for your breeding tank and offers the most precise temperature control possible.
- Heating mat or heating plate: A good solution for small breeding tanks. Place the mat under the tank and check the water temperature regularly with a thermometer.
A simple digital thermometer is a must, so you can make sure that the temperature is neither too high nor too low.
If you want to start your breeding in spring or autumn, plan early and test your technique in advance. A constant temperature is particularly important in the first 48 hours after setting the eggs, as this is the time when it is decided whether and how many Triops will hatch.
How many degrees do Triops eggs need? – Conclusion
The answer to the question ‘How many degrees do Triops eggs need?’ is clear: 24 to 28 °C, with an ideal value of 26 to 27 °C. If you adhere to these conditions, there is a very good chance that small prehistoric crustaceans will soon be romping around in your tank. So: check the thermometer, switch on the heating and you will soon be able to watch nature’s miracle come to life.
Good luck with your Triops breeding!
