Triops have an extremely fast metabolism, which is why they need to be fed regularly and specifically when kept at home. Triops are particularly sensitive in the first few days of life and rely on optimal conditions. As they have no teeth, they initially feed on their yolk sac and also absorb the finest nutrients, microorganisms and bacteria present in the water. Good water quality and sufficient light play a crucial role in successful triops breeding.
Active feeding of the triops nauplii begins around 48 hours after hatching. We particularly recommend finely ground spirulina powder or chlorella powder, as these microalgae are rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals and provide optimal support for the rapid growth of these prehistoric crustaceans. This specialised food is ideal for the early stages of development and ensures a high survival rate.
As the triops breeding process progresses, their diet can be gradually expanded, for example with decapsulated Artemia eggs or specialised triops feed. A balanced diet is crucial for ensuring healthy, robust triops that develop quickly. Anyone wishing to breed triops successfully should therefore pay particular attention to proper feeding, water quality and suitable environmental conditions.
Spirulina algae powder for young Triops
Our spirulina algae powder is excellent for providing the young animals with optimal nutrition through the first days of life. The spirulina powder has a high proportion of proteins (approx. 60 percent) and carbohydrates with a fat content of about ten percent.
It is important not to overfeed the Triops, as they can quickly suffer death from overfeeding. In addition, water turbidity can occur. Bacteria will develop after a short time due to rotting caused by uneaten food and will negatively affect the water quality. A toothpick tip of the food is perfectly sufficient. The food can either be placed directly on the water surface or mixed with water in a test tube, pulled out with a pipette and the mixture sprayed into the tank. The second option has the advantage that the food is distributed throughout the entire tank and is therefore easier for the Triops to find.
As it is very fine, the spirulina algae powder is suitable for all types of primeval crabs as well as brine shrimp, fairy shrimp and clam shells.
Decapsulated Artemia eggs as a transitional food
After four days of feeding with the spirulina algae powder, solid food should not be fed immediately. It is still too big for the Triops and the Spirulina algae powder is no longer sufficient as food. For this reason, the Triops get hungry and eat each other. But there is a solution: decapsulated Artemia eggs. This food is suitable for a transition period of ten days and has a higher nutritional value than the spirulina powder. However, it is smaller and more digestible than food sticks or granulated food, which is fed as the main food from about 14 days. Decapsulated Artemia eggs are rich in vitamins, high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
With the decapsulated Artemia eggs you create an optimal basis for strong and healthy primeval crayfish.
Ingredients:
Crude protein: 62%
Crude ash: 5%
Crude fat: 20%
Crude fibre: 3%
High quality food sticks for healthy Triops
After about 14 days of feeding with the spirulina powder and the decapsulated Artemia eggs, food sticks are used. Our floating food sticks are designed for species-appropriate feeding, contain natural ingredients and ensure the Triops’ well-being. The food sticks contain sufficient dietary fibre as well as vitamins and microelements.
