Ancient crustaceans are omnivores and extremely adaptable in their diet. All day long, they sift through the substrate, filter the finest particles from the water, nibble on plant debris and also consume animal matter. Even cannibalism is part of their natural behaviour – particularly when food is scarce or significant size differences develop within the group. This behaviour is not a sign of ‘abnormalities’, but a survival mechanism developed over millions of years.
Due to their rapid growth, Triops have a very active metabolism. In home breeding, the natural food supply in the water is therefore insufficient, making targeted feeding by the keeper necessary. Particular care is required in the first few days of life after hatching, as the foundations for healthy development are laid during this sensitive phase.
Newly hatched triops do not yet have fully developed mouthparts and cannot consume solid food. Initially, they feed on their yolk sac, as well as on microorganisms, bacteria and dissolved nutrients in the water. For this reason, a suitable water composition is crucial to provide the animals with sufficient nutrients right from the start.
Active feeding begins around 48 hours after hatching. The rule here is: less is more. Even a minimal amount – about a toothpick tip of spirulina powder – is perfectly sufficient to feed the young. Overfeeding should be avoided at all costs, as excess food can quickly degrade water quality and endanger the sensitive nauplii.
As the animals grow, their nutritional requirements increase significantly. The amount of food can therefore be adjusted gradually, whilst always ensuring clean water quality and a balanced diet. Controlled, needs-based feeding not only promotes growth but also reduces stress and can significantly reduce the incidence of cannibalism within the group.
By feeding them correctly during the first few days, you lay the foundations for stable development and healthy, robust triops that successfully complete their entire life cycle.
Decapsulated Artemia eggs as a transitional feed for healthy triops
After around four days of feeding with spirulina or chlorella algae powder, a crucial transitional phase begins in the triops’ development. At this stage, the fine powder alone is no longer sufficient to meet the increasing nutritional requirements of the rapidly growing animals. At the same time, traditional solid food such as food sticks or pellets is still too coarse and cannot be optimally consumed by the triops.
If feeding is not adjusted during this phase, a nutrient deficiency quickly develops. The animals become more restless, search more intensively for food and are increasingly prone to cannibalism – a clear sign that the food supply is no longer sufficient.
The ideal solution for this sensitive transition period is decapsulated Artemia eggs. They form the perfect bridge between fine dust food and later staple food. Due to their small size, they are easy to consume, whilst at the same time providing significantly more energy and nutrients than Spirulina or Chlorella alone.
Hatchling Artemia eggs are ideal for a period of around ten days. During this phase, they promote steady growth, boost vitality and ensure the animals are adequately nourished without unnecessarily polluting the water. Only from around 10 to 14 days of age can Triops be gradually introduced to coarser food such as food sticks or pellets.
Another advantage: decapsulated Artemia eggs are particularly nutrient-rich. They contain high-quality proteins, essential vitamins and valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which are of great importance for the development, moulting and general health of the animals. At the same time, they are easily digestible and help maintain stable water quality when used sparingly.
Through the targeted use of decapsulated Artemia eggs, you can create optimal conditions for rearing strong, healthy Triops. They reliably bridge the critical developmental phase and lay the foundation for successful further development into the adult stage.
