How can I improve the water quality in my aquarium?

Good water quality is the foundation for a healthy aquarium and crucial for the well-being of the animals. Whether you keep triops, fish or other aquatic creatures, clean and stable water ensures vitality, minimises stress and prevents disease. But how can you improve water quality permanently and maintain it at an optimal level? In this blog article, I explore this question.

Ensure clean water right from the start

The most important step begins when setting up the aquarium. Use fresh, uncontaminated water if possible and allow the tank to run for a sufficient amount of time before adding the animals. Filters and other equipment should already be active at this stage so that a stable biological balance can be established. Boiled, cooled or filtered water helps to avoid contamination from the outset, especially when breeding triops, where filters are often not used.

Regular maintenance plays a key role during ongoing operation. Food residues, excrement and dead plants or animals increase the nutrient content in the water and thus promote the formation of ammonium, nitrite or nitrate. Triops in particular tend to overeat. Therefore, only feed as much as will be eaten within a few minutes and remove uneaten food promptly.

Partial water changes as an effective measure

Regular water changes are one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve water quality. Replacing just 20 to 30 percent of the water each week can significantly reduce pollutants. In small Triops breeding tanks, it may even be advisable to perform a mini water change every day. Always ensure that the new water is at the same temperature and has similar water values.

If you use a filter, clean it regularly, but only carefully. Important microorganisms that break down pollutants settle in the filter. Cleaning with aquarium water instead of tap water helps to maintain this biological function. A good oxygen supply is also important – especially at higher temperatures, as warm water binds less oxygen.

Natural support and water treatment

Aquarium plants can absorb excess nutrients and also provide oxygen. If necessary, water conditioners can also be used to neutralise chlorine or heavy metals in tap water. However, caution is advised with triops, as they can be sensitive to chemical additives.

Cloudiness, unpleasant odours or slimy deposits are clear indications of deteriorating water quality. In such cases, you should act quickly: change the water, determine the cause and, if necessary, feed less. Regular monitoring of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, pH value and temperature helps to prevent problems.

Improving water quality in the aquarium – Conclusion

You can improve the water quality in your aquarium through careful preparation, controlled feeding, regular partial water changes and close observation. If you react early and maintain your aquarium consistently, your animals will remain healthy and active. They will reward your efforts with natural behaviour, intense colours and a longer life expectancy.
