Prehistoric crabs are a fascination and enrichment for every child’s room, as children learn for the first time to take social responsibility for a living creature. Due to the short life span of a maximum of 90 days, there is no overly strong attachment to the animals. A very beautiful specimen among the Triops species is the Triops longicaudatus Red or Triops-red longicaudatus. A genetic defect gives it its red colour, which is produced by its own blood. Triops longicaudatus Red is an albino species of Triops longicaudatus and is only found in aquarium breeding. In the wild you will look for it in vain. As this Triops is related to Triops longicaudatus, both can be kept together in one tank.
Female Triops are able to lay eggs after about two weeks and bury them in the sand. After the Triops have reached the end of their life, you can dry the eggs with the sand, freeze them and then start breeding again. Due to the rapid growth of the Triops, there is certainly never a dull moment in the aquarium. Triops longicaudatus need a temperature in the range of 25° C and can be bred with distilled water, still mineral water or river and lake water. Water from a pond can also be taken.
Experience primeval times at home in your living room and with your children!
