Prehistoric crabs are a fascination and enrichment for every child’s room. For the first time, children learn to take social responsibility for a living creature from hatching to the end of its life. Due to the relatively short lifespan of two to three months, there is no overly strong bond, such as that of a cat or a dog. A very beautiful specimen among the Triops species is Triops longicaudatus Red. A genetic defect gives it its red colour, which is produced by its own blood. Triops longicaudatus Red is an albino species of Triops longicaudatus and is only found in aquarium breeding. In the wild you will search for it in vain. As this Triops is related to Triops longicaudatus, both can be kept together in one tank.
After 14 days the Triops females are able to lay eggs and bury them in the sand. After the end of their life, you can dry the sand with the eggs, freeze them and then start a new breeding. Due to the rapid growth of the Triops, it will certainly never be boring in the aquarium. Triops longicaudatus need a temperature in the range of 25° C and can be bred with distilled water, still mineral water or river and lake water.
Take this fascinating journey into the past and experience prehistoric times with your children – at home in your living room.
