How often should I feed the Triops? – A guide to healthy rearing

If you have just started breeding Triops, you are probably asking yourself a lot of questions. One of them is certainly: How often do I actually have to feed my Triops? The answer to this question is crucial for the growth, health and life expectancy of your Triops. In this blog article, you will find out what really matters when it comes to feeding – and why less is often more.

How often should I feed the Triops: The first days of life

As soon as they hatch, the tiny Triops larvae immediately start looking for food. In the first two days, however, they do not need any conventional food as they initially feed on microorganisms in the water. Only when the nauplii become significantly more active and you can easily recognise them with the naked eye can you start feeding them.

Especially at the beginning: Only feed tiny amounts – at best special powdered food for Triops or finely ground spirulina powder. Don’t put too much into the water straight away, because what is not eaten will contaminate the water and can endanger your animals. A pinch every 24 to 36 hours is completely sufficient.

In growth: continuity is crucial

As the Triops grow, their hunger naturally increases. You will notice that they eat more and more greedily and that the leftover food they are offered disappears more quickly. From around the 5th to 7th day, you can switch to a more balanced food – for example, decapsulated Artemia eggs or special food sticks.

Ideally, feeding should then take place once a day. However, always check to see if any leftovers remain in the water. If so, pause feeding until everything has been eaten. Triops are robust, but sensitive to poor water quality. A regular water change in combination with well thought-out feeding is therefore the best prerequisite for successful breeding.

Feeding adult Triops

Once your Triops are fully grown – which usually happens after two to three weeks – you can increase the amount of food a little, but you must continue to be careful. Once a day is sufficient in most cases. If you have particularly active or many animals in the tank, you can also feed a small portion twice a day – in the morning and in the evening. Observe the behaviour of your animals: If they seem lethargic or food is left over overnight, then it was probably too much.

How often do I have to feed the Triops? – Conclusion

The question ‘How often should I feed the Triops?’ cannot be answered in general terms, but depends on their age, the number of animals and the condition of the water. With an attentive look at the tank and a good dose of patience, you will quickly get a feel for how much food your small prehistoric crustaceans really need. Stick to the rule of thumb: It is better to give small amounts regularly than large portions all at once – this will keep your Triops healthy and active until the last day of their lives.
